There is no doubt that Larry Brown was the next "Southern Gothic" writer. What is fascinating was that he could write about sickening atrocities such poetic language....
This was a compelling read, a brilliant portrayal of the macho, drinking life in a small town in Mississipi. A gradual, strong bond forms between Gary, a small-for-his age teenage boy, and Joe, his sometime employer, a strong, alcoholic, impulsive ex-con who works as a contractor.
Great book.
